  •   Seattle, June 9, 2011:  May 2011 marked the 30 year anniversary of the founding of Dexter + Chaney, developer of Spectrum® Construction Software.  Founded in 1981, Dexter + Chaney ( http://www.dexterchaney.com) delivers a fully integrated software solution addressing the accounting, operational, and reporting needs of the construction industry.  Spectrum includes 28 modules that can be combined to provide a seamless solution that fits the needs of contractors across all construction industries whether they are general contractors, electrical contractors, mechanical/HVAC contractors, heavy/highway & utilities contractors or specialty subcontractors.    Thousands of users representing over 1,000 construction firms across the United States and abroad use Spectrum software to manage the financial and operational sides of their businesses.  Dexter + Chaney continues to leverage the latest technology to continually advance the software, improving functionality and delivering a solution that helps contractors across all industries become more efficient and productive.

    Celebrating the Past
The company was started by two business partners, John Chaney and Mark Dexter.  Chaney and Dexter worked together as CPAs in the consulting division of Arthur Andersen (now Accenture) on a huge maritime project involving pricing change orders and mark ups, which was a manual process at the time.  They felt that there had to be a better way and decided to apply the newly emerging technology of electronic spreadsheets to the construction market.  Thus, Dexter + Chaney began in the spare bedroom of Dexter’s Seattle apartment.  From this humble beginning, the company is now based in a corporate campus in north Seattle.  What began as a two person startup and has become a robust player in the construction software industry and although the company has seen many changes during the past 30 years, Dexter + Chaney’s dedication to serving the needs of their customers has not been one of them.  “Our founding principles of making Spectrum the last software our clients need to buy and our commitment to making each client a customer for life held true in 1981 and still apply today,” said John Chaney, president and co-founder.  “Producing software that our clients never need to re-purchase is a commitment that we’ve upheld for 30 years.  It’s been true for all of our past releases and upgrades and we will continue to do the same with our future versions and for the life of the product,” said Chaney.

    Looking Ahead to the Future
The company commemorated this milestone with an event for staff held on the corporate campus on Thursday, June 9, 2011.  As Dexter + Chaney celebrates this milestone, the company continues to focus on the upcoming release of Spectrum version 14.  “We’ve taken clients from green screen to DOS to Windows over the last 30 years,” said Chaney.  “Version 14 is as big a leap in technology, access, and usability as any we made in the past.  I’m not exaggerating when I say that Dexter + Chaney is poised to revolutionize the way construction software serves the industry.”

“The development of Spectrum version 14 was rooted in our commitment to our clients,” continued Chaney.  “Our development philosophy is simple: listen carefully to customers and then provide what they really need.  That was true 30 years ago and it remains the same today.”
